«If anyone is running the stable version of Windows 10, I need the exact instructions on how to defer. «

The public release ‘retail’ version of Win10 Home does not allow deferring updates. You can’t do anything

that won’t also stop the security updates.

I don’t know how effective it is, but you can disable the Windows Update Service. This may cause issues

with all software automatic updates, including Anti-virus though.

There would be registry hacks that shut updates down as well, but again this is likely to cause other issues.

— The good news. A fix is coming next month when the «Creators» update is released.

MS have actually heard all the millions complaining about being caught out with reboots, etc. and have included

a system for deferring updates for limited periods of time (which, I gather is already available on insider builds).

— Now if we could just get them to let those who don’t want every ‘anniversary’ updates bloatware, ‘improvement’,

‘new feature’ or ‘app’ to forego ‘anniversary’ updates altogether. Then we might be able to settle down with

a familiar, not ever changing OS for a couple of years.

They could just keep security features or critical OS fixes separate from the ‘anniversary’ updates.

Thank you for your interest in Windows 10. This issue usually arises due to outdated drivers. You may try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. It will scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files in Windows. To run the SFC scan, refer to the Microsoft article below.

Method 2: Update Drivers

Refer to the following article and update all the drivers available.

If you are unable to find the drivers for Windows 10, you may try to install the drivers in compatibility mode with Windows 8.1.

Firstly download the driver from your computer’s manufacturer website and then install it.

Refer (Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows)

Note: This link also applies to Windows 10.

If the issue persists after trying the methods above. Try to add a new user and check if the issue persists there.

Crete a new User account

To create a new user account, refer to the steps mentioned in the following Microsoft link:

Thank you for your replay, Unfortunately nothing worked.

SFC scan did not find any integrity violations.
— All Drivers were Automatically Installed already.
Compatibility Troubleshooter did helped me to uninstall & reinstall a driver update, However nothing changed about Defer Upgrades.
— I created a new User Account, but i didn’t find Defer Upgrades there neither.

well, right now i don’t really think it’s really important if Defer Upgrades option is there or not. But if it’s going to cause crashes or some errors in system, i think i should be aware of that then.

Please reply: What is the edition of your Windows 10?

Kindly verify the edition, press «Windows key + Pause/Break key» and check the edition of Windows 10. If you do not have pause/break key, follow the steps: Type Windows key + R to go to the run command, type «control system» and click Enter.

You can see Defer Upgrades option only when your system is Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education.

Hope this helps. Please respond if you have further related queries.

Without any verification, it’s Windows 10 Home.

Thanks for your reply.
I was just wondering because the Defer Upgrades option was actually there after the upgrade and stayed there for 2-3 days.

That would have been nice to know. When I first installed.

Internet Explorer has turned into a real POS since the Windows 10 Upgrade. Here lately it seems to be getting worse by the week.

I have always used Norton and Internet Explorer. Microsoft Edge doesn’t support Norton. How secure is Microsoft Edge? Who Knows’? I am not willing to put my Identity on the chopping block to find out. Are You? Just Sayin? I really don’t want to give up IE but I am not being given much of a choice.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all and to all A good Night. God Bless. CLS

Get Google’s «chrome browser» completely compatible with Nortons. I have used chrome for 3 years and love it. My Nortons internet security works great.

Defer upgrades in windows 10

You can Defer Upgrades & installation of Windows Updates in Windows 10, by modifying the Windows Registry. We have already seen how Windows 10 Professional, Enterprise or Education edition users can easily Defer Upgrades via Settings. Now let us see how to do it by tweaking some Registry keys. When you do this, the download and installation of Windows Updates on your computer system will be deferred. Using Group Policy, you can defer Quality Updates by up to 30 days, and defer Feature Upgrades for up to 180 days using Group Policy or Registry.

Before you proceed, open Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced Options and select the Defer upgrades check-box.

Defer Updates using Group Policy

Type gpedit.msc in Start Search and hit Enter to open the Group Policy Editor. The Group Policy Editor is available in Windows 10 Professional, Enterprise or Education editions only.

Navigate to the following setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Defer Upgrades and Updates.

Double-click on Select when Feature Updates are received and in the Properties box which opens, select Enabled.

Enable this policy to specify what type of feature updates to receive, and when. The branch readiness level for each new Windows 10 feature update is initially considered a “Current Branch” (CB) release, to be used by organizations for initial deployments. Once Microsoft has verified the feature update should be considered for enterprise deployment, it will be declared a branch readiness level of “Current Branch for Business” (CBB). You can defer receiving feature updates for up to 180 days. To prevent feature updates from being received on their scheduled time, you can temporarily pause feature updates. The pause will remain in effect for 60 days or until you clear the check box.

From the drop-down menu select Current Branch or Current Branch for Business and then the period for which you want to defer the updates. You may select the Pause quality updates checkbox if you wish to. —>

Next, double-click on Select when Quality Updates are received and in the Properties box which opens, select Enabled.

Enable this policy to specify when to receive quality updates. You can defer receiving quality updates for up to 30 days. To prevent quality updates from being received on their scheduled time, you can temporarily pause quality updates. The pause will remain in effect for 35 days or until you clear the check box.

In the field, move the arrows to set a figure from 1 to 30 to defer the updates and select the Pause quality updates checkbox if you wish to.

Click Apply and restart your computer. —>

TIP: You can now Defer Feature Updates up to 365 days & Quality & Security Updates by 30 days – or Pause Windows 10 Updates by 35 days in Windows 10 Home too!

Defer Upgrades using Registry

You can also achieve this by modifying the Registry as follows.

Type regedit in the Start Search bar and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor. Now navigate to the following registry key: —>

Right-click on WindowsUpdate and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Name it DeferUpgrade. and give it a value of 1.

Now again right-click on WindowsUpdate and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Name this key as DeferUpgradePeriod, and double-click on it. Here you set its value from 0-8. Here, the digit represents the number of months you want to delay the installation of upgrades. Selecting a number 3 will defer the upgrades by 3 months.

Now for the third time, we have to repeat the process. Again right-click on WindowsUpdate and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Name the DWORD as DeferUpdatePeriod and double-click on it and give it a value between 0-4. Here the digits stand for the number of weeks. If you choose 4, you will be able to delay the installation of updates by 4 weeks.

If you wish to simply pause all upgrades, under WindowsUpdate key, create a DWORD value, name it as PauseDeferrals and give it a value of 1.

To reverse the changes, you may simply delete the created keys.

Using this method, you can configure Windows Update for Business. For more on this, you may visit Technet.

NOTE: Microsoft has removed the Defer Updates option from Settings in Windows 10 v2004 and later. —>
