My Laptop has the bluetooth light, it doesnt have an internal bluetooth card, but I have a usb bluetooth dongle, is there a way to have that little light in the top right corner of my keyboard come on when I plug it in?

Is there some sort of setting in the registry, etc. That I’ve Missed?

Since it’s bluetooth and windows recognizes it, the light should come on,

and I have windows 7 Professional

The light is there for the installed Bluetooth option from the factory, as is the light on my Gateway. Unless you get an internal card installed by Dell, the light is not going to work simply by plugging in a dongle for it. I have the same setup on my Gateway (no internal card, USB Bluetooth dongle) and my light doesn’t and will never come on.

In addition, it’s not related with which OS you are running. Please contact Dell support for this problem.

General discussion

The Bluetooth problem must be greater than this forum would suggest. I’ve had a problem with Bluetooth with versions 7000, 7022 and 7048. In fact, it’s the only real problem I have had with Windows 7 and it is always the same problem. It searches for devices but never finds anything, it doesn’t timeout, doesn’t give any indication that it is actually working. The devices are discoverable. There are no problems reported in Device Manager. I’ve tried using the internal Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR and external Microsoft Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth 2.0. I’ve read all the Bluetooth reports in the Win7 forum and can’t believe that I am the only one with this problem. And what’s really annoying is that in a period of 15 months, I’ve only used the Bluetooth facility once but over the last month, it seems I want to be using it frequently. Bluetooth is meant to be the premier for wireless gadgets but I have never had a great deal of success with it; if you all make an effort and report your problems, it might take a higher priority within Microsoft (and by saying that I’m not suggesting its Microsoft fault but Microsoft might nudge somebody into fixing it). Please add you comments to this thread or if you know whats wrong I’d like to hear from you.

I have BT problems with Win7 too. Every time I put my Win7 beta drive in and boot up, I have to screw around with the discovery process. Sometimes it works right away, but most of the time it takes so long and so many attempts that I don’t know what made it work by the time it finally does!

I’m afraid I don’t have a solution for your problem (and mine), but thought I’d add some sympathy.

I’d suggest reinstalling the Bluetooth driver in Compatibility mode . Remove that hardware device in Device Manager , right-click on the driver executable/installer file and select the Compatibility tab; click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows Vista in the list-down box; then try installing the device driver. In addition, you can use the Windows XP driver for testing.

If the problem still persists, please understand that Windows 7 is a new operating system (only the beta version) and whole driverstore has been reprogrammed; some old driver is not compatible with new OS. I suggest that you should wait for another period of time till the retail version is released and push the vendor company to upgrade their device driver. Thanks for your time and understanding!

This will give you some guidelines.

Thanks for your responses and advice. However, I still report that the Bluetooth module still does not work and your suggestions are not so simple to implement. This is why I want to make a big deal about this issue now.

My Bluetooth module is manufactured by Broadcom; Broadcom does not supply drivers to Joe Public and expect computer manufacturers to provide drivers. However, computer manufactures like Dell do not update drivers and we (Joe Public) end up with computers that do not work properly. We end up relying on Microsoft to resolve issues for us. The drivers for Bluetooth v2.1 install via the Win7 installation disk or windows update, hence we do not get the opportunity to experiment with compatibility mode.

To make matter worse Microsoft are now trying to hide the driver version number (not too sure on the logic behind that idea). However, I believe that the version number supplied in Windows 7 is 6.2.0.8900 dated 22/4/2009 and is stamped as Microsoft Hardware Compatible. If I cheat on Broadcom download, they try and install version 5.5.0.7200 dated 27/04/2009; that version looses Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.

I have reported the problem to Broadcom, who maintain that it’s a Dell problem and nothing to do with them. However, besides my laptop computer (Dell Vostro 1700), I have also installed Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion dv7-2030ea and a Toshiba Satellite . The HP laptop had exactly the same problem as me — install Win7 and nothing else, bluetooth works, after a few programs have been loaded on, Bluetooth stops working. That would make you think that the programs were causing some sort of conflict. But this logic seems false when the Bluetooth works fine in Vista with exactly the same programs installed. I can not determine what the driver version number is in Vista (the SP2 update follows the Win7 idea of hiding the driver numbers). However, I suspect it is the same driver installed with Win7 (Vista was a clean install including the SP2 update). The Toshiba Satellite switched off the Bluetooth and Win7 didn’t detect it; couldn’t find a solution on the Toshiba website to switch the Bluetooth back on.

I really believe that the problem lies with the Broadcom drivers and not Win7 (it was a Broadcom Bluetooth on the HP laptop as well).

The reasons Vista failed was driver problems. It is not only Broadcom who play the blame game. Until recently Nvidia behaved exactly the same. In fact, the Nvidia website still says that its standard drivers are not suitable for a Dell Vostro (although they seem to work very well). Besides the Bluetooth issue, I also have printer problems. Microsoft try to download new drivers but they wont install.

To clarify what I’m saying, I’ve had access to 3 laptops with a Bluetooth module and had problems with all three. Hence, my original posting about that I cant believe I’m the only one with problems and proved to be accurate.

I much prefer using Win7 as opposed to Vista but for the driver issue problems listed above, it would be a mistake for me upgrade to Win7 because after having 2 years of problems with Vista. Vista is now great; the same drivers as Win7, repeatable boot times (although it takes me an extra 10 seconds to boot up) but everything works. If I purchase Win7 and have problems, do I phone up Microsoft helpline to fix it. You don’t tend to get driver updates from Microsoft unless you do a clean install of the operating system.

I hope that Microsoft can have another look at the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility program now to avoid costly problems later.
