Те, кто выбирает Windows лишь только потому, что в ней есть возможность установить на свой рабочий стол гаджеты, теперь могут смело устанавливать Linux!
Команда разработчиков Google Desktop for Linux рада представить первую открытую реализацию Google Gadgets для рабочих столов Linux.
Google Gadgets позволяет использовать популярные и замечательные виджеты (радио, погода, мини-игры и прочее) на вашем рабочем столе Linux. Проект совместим с гаджетами, написанными для Google Desktop for Windows и Universal Gadgets от iGoogle.
Установка Google Gatgets очень проста, но сначала потребуется установить некоторые пакеты и библиотеки, необходимые для работы Google Gadgets. Для установки вам необходимо открыть Терминал (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal) и выполнить следующее (все одной строкой!):
sudo aptget -y install libtool automake autoconf libxul-dev libghc6-mozembed-dev libcurl4-gnutls-dev libxml2-dev zlib1g-dev xulrunner xulrunner-1.9-dev libgtk2.0-dev libcairo2-dev libdbus-1-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libqt4-dev
Ну, а теперь, собственно, и сам процесс установки:
- Скачаем Google Gadgets отсюда;
- Извлечем данные из архива;
- Откроем Терминал (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal) и выполним следующие команды:
./configure —prefix=/usr
make sudo make install
Все! Теперь вы можете нажать Alt F2 и выполнить ggl-gtk (если вы используете GNOME) или ggl-qt (если у вас KDE). В системном трее вы увидите красивую иконку, правое нажатие на которой, откроет доступ к гаджетам.
Install Google Gadgets for Linux on Ubuntu
Google has released a platform for running their widget applications (Google Desktop Gadgets and web-based Universal Gadgets) on Linux. Google Gadgets for Linux is an open source project, and includes front-ends for GNOME and KDE environments.
Google Gadgets for Linux provides the largest missing feature from the Linux version of Google Desktop, which includes gadgets only in the Windows and Mac OS versions.
Compiz desktop effects or another compositing window manager are recommended for running Google Gadgets. Note that Google Gadgets is still in a development stage. You may also be interested in Screenlets, which can also run Google’s universal gadgets.
Install Google Gadgets from GetDeb
GetDeb.net has an Ubuntu package of the latest version of Google Gadgets. Download the package, and double click the file to open the installer.
Install Google Gadgets from repository
An unofficial repository for Google Gadgets is available. Unfortunately, this repository has not been updated at the time of writing to the latest version (0.9.3) of Google Gadgets, which includes some important fixes. I’ll leave these instructions here also for when the repository is updated.
Open System->Administration->Software Sources , and select the Third-Party Software tab. Click Add , and paste in this repository entry:
Close the Software Sources dialog and when prompted, reload the software repositories.
Install Google Gadgets for Linux from the package google-gadgets (click the link to install), or by running the command below in your terminal:
Running Google Gadgets for Linux
You can run Google Gadgets from the Run Application dialog (Alt-F2), or from the terminal with this command:
The -ns option disables the sidebar, which I have found to work very poorly. Remove this option from the command if you want the sidebar.
Once Google Gadgets is running, you can control it from the notification area icon. Right click on it and select Add Gadgets to get started adding Gadgets to your desktop.
Start Google Gadgets Automatically
To start Google Gadgets when you log in, open System->Preferences->Sessions . Click Add and create a new item for Google Gadgets with the command ggl-gtk .
Compiz Widget Layer integration
Just like with Screenlets, you can use Compiz’s Widget Layer plugin to get an effect similar to Mac OS’ dashboard. You will need to have the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings tool (CCSM) installed, and be using the custom desktop effects level.
Launch System->Preferences->Advanced Desktop Effects Settings . Enable the Widget Layer plugin, and enter its preferences screen. Select the Behavior tab, and type the following into the Widget Windows text box:
Your gadgets should now be hidden. Press F9 to toggle the widget layer to show and hide them.

Вам будет необходимо добавить репозиторий Launchpad данной программы и установить последнюю версию. Успешно пройти через все шаги поможет домашняя страница Screenlets и блог Tombuntu.
Как только программа успешно установлена, просто кликните в ней «Install», выберите «Web Widget» и получите линк на страницу виджетов, наличествующих в каталоге, вместе со стандартными инструкциями установки.
В одной только Google database хранится более 45 000 различных виджетов, выполняющих самые разнообразные функции: RSS-ридеры, «карманные» метеорологи, sticky notes и мн.др. Поверьте мне на слово — уйти оттуда не утянув с собой пару-тройку просто невозможно.
Программа отлично играется с Beryl и включает множество опций размещения, таких как «always on top», «always underneath» и т.д. В добавок — с виджетом для Beryl можно прятать и показывать приложения, аналогично виджетам Mac OS X.

Google Gadgets is an open-source implementation of Google Gadgets platform for Linux.
Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running desktop gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. We are compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. Following Linux norms, this project will be open-sourced, under the Apache License.
The Windows and Mac versions of Google Desktop has provided gadget hosting functionality on Windows and Mac for a while now and the Linux version of Google Gadgets will extend this platform to Linux users. By enabling cross-platform gadgets, a large library of existing gadgets are immediately available to Linux users. In addition, gadget developers will benefit from a much larger potential user base without having to learn a new API.
There’s two main components to the application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently we have hosts written for GTK+ and QT, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similiar to that of Google Desktop for Windows.
Configure and build
$ mkdir -p build/debug $ cd build/debug $ ../../configure —enable-debug $ make
The configure script has many options that you can use, use command:
To get a detailed list. For example, if the spidermonkey library was not installed into system standard library directory, you may want to use —with-smjs-incdir and —with-smjs-libdir options to specify the include and library directory of installed spidermonkey library.
If you don’t specify any configure option, the configure script will determine the optimal options automatically.
Note: the debug build contains extra code only for debugging purpose, like debug logs. It will affect the runtime performance and increase the code size. Normally it’s not necessary for ordinary users.
Install, run and do unit tests
to install google gadgets for linux into the default installation directory, /usr/local. Use —prefix configure option to change the default directory. You may need root privilege to do installation.
If you want to make a binary package instead of installing it into system, you may use this command:
$ make DESTDIR= install
Then all things will be installed into /tmp/ggl-root directory. Then you can just pack everything in this directory altogether into a package.
Currently there are two runnable binaries (both or one of them, depending on which toolkit(s) you chose):
* ggl-gtk A host based on Gtk widget libraries. * ggl-qt A host based on Qt widget libraries.
They have identical functionalities, you can choose either one. However for now, ggl-gtk is more mature than ggl-qt. You can just run them from command line. Use -bg option to turn them into background mode. -h option can print a brief description for available command options.
If you want to run all unit tests, just use this command:
Ordinary users are not necessary to run unit tests.
