LanShutDown is a free Windows app that can reboot and shutdown remote hosts.
If you’ve ever needed to shut down a computer on your network remotely, you know it can be tough! Sometimes an app refuses to terminate and makes the computer hang, sometimes the machine isn’t configured correctly for remote termination, sometimes the termination software requires a remote agent to be installed for the software to work correctly.
But LanShutDown requires no remote agent to be installed, can force remote termination and reboot, and is insanely easy to deploy and use across both small and large-scale networks.
One of the best features of this program is the fact that you’re not only able to force termination, but you also can see IP addresses and friendly computer names displayed right in your action window so you only reboot machines on your network.
It’s important to point out that the remote host will need to have magicpacket and WakeonLAN enabled for some functions since this program uses Microsoft’s own network admin protocols to work. This tool is also only designed for computers using Windows and may not work to reboot an Android, iOS, or Linux device depending on their configuration settings.
This program also hasn’t been updated in over a decade (development ceased in 2005); it works well on Windows 2000 and Windows NT computers, but may not work with more modern Windows 7 or Windows 10. If you’re running Vista or above you might want to try a modern alternative like RemoteRebootX.
