Device information

This is a work in progress with information about the HP ProBook 430 G4. There are many configurations for these models of HP Probooks. The information below are given from a model HP ProBook 430 G4/822C, BIOS P85 Ver. 01.03 12/05/2016, shipped with a Core i5-7200U, 8GB, 256GB SSD. The notebook supports exchanging two memory modules and support one 2,5″ disc drive and one M.2-SSD. The UEFI bios allows legacy boot.

A review in German is available here: HP ProBook 430 G4 review. Basic hardware works out of the box. No configuration was needed. Information for the «Not tested» units will be posted additionally.

Backlight

I have not found a solution so far to control the backlight via kernel hardware control keys via kernel. So backlight control works only via software. It works out of the box under Xfce and under i3wm using a custom command «xbacklight -inc/-dec 10».

ACPI errors

There are lots of acpi related error messages with kernel 4.9.x:

Upstream report: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194833 — this seems to be a BIOS implementation bug.

Graphic card setup

Either modesetting driver or Intel driver seem to work well. Using the Intel driver with DRI3 works well.

Keyboard mapping

To avoid error messages appearing in dmesg add

PCIe error in dmesg

This one can be fixed with appending pci=noaer to the kernel boot line.

fix cold boot hang

There seems to be some bug in i2c_i801 module implementation with HP notebooks. To fix system hang at cold boot add this module loading options and regenerate initrds.

Линукс и HP ProBook 430 G2 — хорошо?

Подскажите, как себя чувствует линукс на ноутбуке HP ProBook 430 G2 (J4R59EA)? Есть какие-то подводные камни? Особо интересует, корректно ли работают suspend и hibernate (S3, S4). Да, и управление кулером ещё.

все везде ок, вентилятор шумит когда надо и не шумит когда не надо, про сон сказать ничего не могу не пользуюсь

По-прежнему хотелось бы узнать, как он засыпает, и особенно — как просыпается.

Использую год уже HP ProBook 430 G1. В целом всё работает. Снёс сусе штатный — поставил Debian Testing. Последнее обновление ядра наглухо сломало суспенд в рам. Суспенд на диск не работал вообще, не просыпался в итоге.

В штатном дистре от сусе работало ВСЁ. Даже всякие мелочи вроде отлючения тачпада по касанию на «белую точку» на тачпаде (на самом деле это не точка, а замаскированая лампочка, когда ты отключаешь тачпад она загорается). Все эти фичи я так понял захардкожены в виде доп модулей ядра в штатном дистре и вытащить оттуда их невозможно. Но и жить с таким кастрированым дистрибутивом просто ужасно (зачем так жить). Установку доп пакетов блокирует менеджер пакетов по причине «не подписано кошерным ключем сусе». На самом деле как-то выкрутиться наверно можно, но мне было малость лениво заниматься такими погружениями.

И главное — время автономной работы и режим работы вентилятора, а так же нагрев. Под штатной сусей эта малютка выжимала рекордные 5 с половиной часов в режиме браузерочиталки. Вентилятор работал крайне редко и ноут не грелся. Под дэбианом максимум удаётся выжать из батарейки часа 2.5 — 3. И греется как котёл в аду. Вентилтор не затыкается ни на секудну. Пытался тюнинговать этот вопрос через laptop-mode powertop и прочее — не помогает ничего.

Can’t install ubuntu on HP probook 440 G4

I have tryed to install Ubunto 18.04 (and another distros like mint, kaly, elementary, etc) but with no succes

I have disabled Secure Boot and enabled Legacy but nothing.

any one Have a clue to get linux installed on this Notebook?

What do you mean LM or Ubuntu «not installing» ? What is the problem exactly ?

Are you able to successfully boot from the installation media ?

Please, provide details. You may also attach pictures/photos.

I have tried several times install Linux on my HP ProBook 440,

booting from the live way, the OS start and let me run the installer, but when the wizard is runing when the partition table is showed, the wizard get frizz.

Some times only the wizard get frizzed, some times OS get frizzed.

I tryed with the lastest version of: Ubuntu, Mint, Elementary iven Kali.

I was thinking the reason was Legacy and secure boot, but a friend told me it is the last linux kernel, so i’ll try a old ubuntu version and see what happend.
