I tried every measure I could to restore my Chessmaster edition 10 game to your new Windows 10 and nothing you say works — including deleting and then re-installing it through Administrator status, which is a confusing ruse in itself, in my opinion. One of your tech support posts says Chessmaster 10th edition is compatible with your system. Then why didn’t it just upload on the transition from Windows 8 to Windows 10 — from one OS to the next — as it did before?
Suffice to say, I lost my expensive chess game because of your shoddy operating system. Not only will it not play on Windows 10, but NOW it will not even play on the restored version of the previous operating windows system I had which I restored for that purpose, Windows 8. I can only assume, with your tremendous war chest of tech designers and programmers, that this is either unblievably stupid on your part, or, more likely, intentional, to either sell me your own games, which I find shoddy too, or to charge me for your expensive tech support — which now I guarantee you will never happen!
Your business practices would be known as «bait and switch.» Promising a better operational experience but delivering limitations that would cause me to spend money out of pocket to rectify. Your business practices represent the lowest form of knavery. And, in my book, this constitutes a mark against you for life. I will endeavor never to give you, Microsoft, any money for anything. Down with exploitive monopolies! You ripoffs!
Furthermore, I will be looking into Linux and urging all my thousands of address book members and followers to do the same.

I found this article posted somewhere on KB3086255. It has a work-around that works for me for Rainbow Six 3 Ravenshield.
It’s the article that was cited in my post above. According to it it will only apply to Win 7 and 8/8.1, not 10. Though if you have actually gotten it to run on Windows 10, that would be interesting news.

Hi, it seems from the above (at least for windows 7 and 8) by uninstalling KB3086255 I can get RTW running again (which I will try). My question is how critical is the KB3086255 update?. I have survived without for the last two years with win 7. Am I better to use a no CD crack? — which I don’t and shouldn’t have to use. I am sure gaming developers wouldn’t be happy with this and definitely not happy that their customers can’t play their games because of a microsoft update.

None of the above, I’m afraid. I uninstalled the whole set of Windows updates that had gone on on 10 September; it was that action that got it working for me. I didn’t find the page with the instructions on how to work around the service until after that.
I would think that you would need to set the secdrv service to demand (probably the equivalent of «Manual» in the services list in the computer management console, I expect) then use the start and stop commands to start and stop it. You certainly don’t want to set it to disabled when you want to use it, but I think that the article’s writer just wanted you to know how to set it to Disabled when you aren’t using it, which is why they included that command. So the commands to turn it on would be:

only being used if you’re prepared to run the security risks of having it constantly on as the author later describes.
But to be honest I’m not going to bother with that. I know that the next time Windows Update runs it’ll put those updates back, but rather than fighting it and constantly fluffing around with manually firing up services I just went to Steam and rebought the Steam edition for a very few bucks. Which I would have been really irate about. were it not for the fact that I had been considering doing that anyway. The constant need to fish out the disk was a pain, doubly so on my notebook which has no built in optical drive but only a USB plug-in, and then there’s always the likelihood that some day, somehow, the CD-ROM will get scratched or damaged. So I figured what the heck, now is the time.
Most of my older games had failed to work since I went to 64 bit anyway; I doubt very much that I shall ever see Pharaoh and Cleopatra again outside of a 32 bit VM, and the same goes for Railroad Tycoon II.
This should not be taken to mean that I’m still not as annoyed as all getout at the way Microsoft handled this — you simply do NOT screw up people’s software without warning like that, not without adequate warning, not with error messages that are pure and misleading drivel, and ideally not without a way to opt out if there is one (which there isn’t for Windows 10 users). However I have a way out of it that actually works better for me in a number of respects, so I’m more «gently simmering» at MS’s idea of customer service at this point than I am incensed.
