Wondering The Dream-Like Land
Proteus is an adventure game developed by Ed Key and David Kanaga, and published by Twisted Tree. The walking simulator offers open world exploration in an artistically rendered environment. Every location plays a different soundtrack that can bring ranges of emotions. Players can discover plains, forest, valleys, islands, bodies of water and ruins. There are no dangers or threats that would stop players from discovering more places. Players are encouraged to watch the weather, the sky and the nature to unwind and relax. They can meditate with the virtual environment and the soundtrack. Everything is procedurally generated so every session is unique. The game comes with the «postcard» function for taking screenshots.

. jabber
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used Adium for over a year along with others in my policy group as a secondary communication channel during group teleconferences. My primary, and really only, use, therefore, is a group chat at a password-protected jabber conferencing site. I searched and searched the menus of Proteus, but I could not discover how to join a group chat room. I can do it easily with Adium and with Pidgin on my new ASUS Eee PC (Xandros Linux based). So, for me, Proteus is useless, as is Psi, because the latter does not support passworded logging into chat rooms. Also, when I tried to set up my jabber account with Proteus, I kept failing until finally I noticed that it was necessary to open another tab to enter the host name for my account. I had thought that it was implicit in my account name (user@host).
Bottom line: Adium is still my chat client of choice for MacOS

Proteus is an excellent product for the most part, but the developer’s service and support is essentially nonexistent. I’ve emailed the developer three times about a registration issue, and I haven’t received a single response. Take the money and run, I suppose. Looks like I’ll be switching to Fire. Save yourself the cash and teach them a lesson about customer service!«Sametime impl. more robust than Adium’s. «

. but that’s the only positive thing I found after 4 weeks of use. I paid, I’ve send in a list of issues (with suggestions for how to address them), but I didn’t get any response. This is lousy.
I would love to go back to Adium, but their Sametime implementation is too shaky. So I have to live with Proteus for now, but I can really recommend Adium for anyone who doesn’t have to use Sametime.daver969 April 11, 2005 / Version: Proteus 4.10

OK, I’ve only used Proteus for a couple of days, but I’ve already found enough annoying bugs to start complaining about. For a program that’s up to version 4, and that costs $15 (compared to other **free** multi protocol chat clients) this thing has too many bugs. Some highlights: the status message doesn’t ‘stick’. I have it set to show my icon in my contact list, and use the (*very* cool, BTW) feature to show the currently playing iTunes song as the status message. But it has this weird habit of disappearing. I don’t know if it disappears for people on the other end, too. And the prefs don’t seem to take effect right away, sometimes. One time I had the «connecting» sound enabled (biiiig mistake!) and one of the services was taking a long time to connect. the sound kept playing and playing and playing, so I went into prefs to turn it off, but it didn’t work. Had to quit the program and start again.
Also, now for some strange reason, pressing cmd-H doesn’t hide Proteus (yes, there are other programs visible to switch to), and clicking on a contact in my contact list doesn’t select them, so I can’t get info about them. Actually, now I can’t do anything with the contact window, close it, change status, anything. Looks like I have to restart the program. That fixed it, but the the problem is that kind of thing happens waaaay too often.
This program has some really cool features that Adium doesn’t have, like invisible mode, and the itunes thing, but overall it’s B.U.G.G.Y., too buggy for a prog that’s supposedly hit version 4 (not to mention the $).«Sametime support much more robust than Adium, but. «

. some usability issues:- using a drawer to switch between multiple sessions is a really strange idea if you only have two or three sessions at a time. Why not have multiple tabs?
- I can only use Sametime within my company’s network. At home I don’t have access (but Proteus tries to connect every 3 seconds adding at least 15% of my CPU load). This usecase isn’t very well covered by Proteus: I don’t want to switch between «enable» and «disable» states of the Sametime account (because the UI for this is a pain). I just want to manually connect and disconnect (like in Adium).
- there is no option to hide the contact list if Proteus is not active (making non-active windows transparent is not a viable alternative because it affects all windows)
- the edit indicator exists only in the contact list but not in typescript window (where typically my attention is). Adium shows it in the session’s tab. I’d like to have it in both places.
- a bouncing dock icon is too invasive, I prefer Adium’s subtle animation.

. product
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The developers quickly put out version 4.09 to fix all the (admittedly big and annoying) bugs in 4.08. I now have almost nothing to complain about. Proteus is a great product, and I highly recommend it. It’s much better than almost every other multi-protocol service out there and at least somewhat better than the ones it’s not much better than. I’ll say that iChat is stronger in some areas, but since that’s just AIM, there really is no decisions to make.jeffcgd January 09, 2005 / Version: Proteus 4.08

Awesome as ever.
Almost as sweet as the 4.08 final candidate tests, with the exception of an issue with Yahoo’s (not Proteus) problem sending files from later model PC Yahoo Messenger clients to Mac versions (This affects all IM clones built on the GAIM Instant Messaging engine: Proteus, FIRE, GAIM etc). Instead of the transfer from the PC Messenger sitting indefinitely after you accept, them timing out, selecting receive now causes that ACCOUNT to be booted, so it has to log on again. This is the only flaw apart from a longer application launch time than in 4.07.
If you are having problems, you may not have taken the recommended advice to rebuild your accounts with the major changes that were made to 4.06 a while ago.
A great app, at a fair price.TheSin January 09, 2005 / Version: Proteus 4.08
