Is there a free QR code reader for Mac?
Is there a QR-Code reader application for Mac OS X? I’m using Mac OS X 10.6 and an iSight.

There is an Adobe Air application you can download called QR Reader — works on any platform that has Air installed, and a bunch of online services you could try too — QRGen looks pretty neat — you upload an image of the QR code and then it processes it for you.
No free app that I’m aware of, but for a few dollars/euro you can download QuickMark from the Mac App Store, here’s the link
I just discovered QR Journal, which works fine for me. The latest version requires OS X 10.8/10.9 but there is a legacy version available which works with 10.6.
Now desktop users with an iSight (or iSight compatible) camera can read QR codes. Found a QR code in a magazine or catalog? Simply hold up to the iSight camera to scan, store and browse to. Received a QR code in an email? Just drag it into QR Journal to read it.
Online encode/decode:
There is an open source command line tool named ZBar. It takes a photo as an argument and extracts the information out of any QRCode that it detects in the image.
The open source project QR-Reader-Mac provides an Applescript script that acts as a wrapper to zbar . You can create a shortcut to the script for processing QRCodes or create a service, as explained below. The script will automatically open the URL contained within the QRCode in your default browser.
ZBar can be easily installed with Homebrew:
To install QR-Reader-Mac:
Open the QR-Reader-Mac GitHub project page, select Code and download the project as a ZIP file:
Double click the ZIP file to extract it and move open_QRCode.workflow to the
/Library/Services , select Finder, press Shift Command G , paste
/Library/Services and press Enter.
Open System Preferences and add a shortcut to the open_QRCode service under Keyboard > Shortcuts > Services > General:
(Important: Note that QR-Reader-Mac expects to find the executable ‘zbarimg’ in /usr/local/bin/zbarimg , which is the standard path Homebrew will install it.)

QR decoder that works on mac?
Anyone know a QR decoder that works on mac or that might be online? I just need to decode one single image.

Unfortunately, the most used library libdecodeqr is depends on OpenCV (gtk2) and it is too hard to compile it on OS X. (Tried to compile it because it is needed by Image::DecodeQR perl module — but unsuccessful).
Fortunately, found this link: http://macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=37404 from citing the next:
- Download the ZBar source code.
- Unpack the the tarball, and open the resulting directory in a Terminal window.
- Type ./configure —disable-video —without-python —without-gtk —without-qt to configure the build process, limiting dependencies to ImageMagick.
- Type «make» to invoke the build process.
- Type «sudo make install», and enter an administrator password when prompted.
You will need ImageMagick what can be installed from macports.
After installing the ZBar, you can nicely decode qrcode with a command
Tested on OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 (and Lion/10.7.5)- and works nicely. Becasue it only depends on ImageMagick (exists in macports)- should be easily «compilable» on other OS X versions too.

QR Code Reader for Mac OS X that Utilizes iSight Camera

macrumors newbie
I’ve been using Optiscan as a QR Code Reader on my iPhone. I’m looking for essentially the same type of program, except it will be on my MacBook Pro (or any other Mac desktop/notebook) that uses an iSight Camera.
There are programs that generate QR Codes, but I am looking for one that does specifically reading. It can do both, or any combination, but the reading must be included.
I preliminary Google search brings me close, a lot of possibilities (mostly in Japanese, which i do not read). But ultimately I have found nothing. I was hoping someone could direct me towards program.

I’m after this nonexistent app too.
I think it’s exactly the sort of thing we’ll see more of when the Mac App Store launches.
Small utility apps which have strong core functionality and work effectively without much unnecessary extras.

Since OSX 10.9 / iOS 7 apple offers a CI filter to generate QR codes. However, scaling the QR code to the desired size without blurring the image doesn’t work out of the box. The QRCoder library can help you with that. It also contains a handy view controller to scan QR codes (iOS only).
Simply use an instance of QRCodeGenerator to create an image of type QRImage. This is a type alias for UIImage under iOS and NSImage under OS X.
You can set the correction level to one of the values [L,M,Q,H]. The meaning is as follows:
- Level L – up to 7% damage
- Level M – up to 15% damage
- Level Q – up to 25% damage
- Level H – up to 30% damage
To run the example project, clone the repo, and run pod install from the Example directory first.
Requires OS X 10.9 / iOS 8.
QRCoder is available through CocoaPods. To install it, simply add the following line to your Podfile:
