RTL8188CUS wifi USB adapter, but macOS thinks it’s Ethernet?
bkendig
I bought an Edimax EW-7811Un wireless networking USB adapter. When I connected it and installed the driver (EW-7811Un_Mac_driver_v1.0.1.4), I was disappointed to find that, to macOS (10.13), it looks like an Ethernet adapter: in the Network system preferences it has an Ethernet icon and says «Cable Unplugged». A somewhat clunky third-party program has to be run to connect it to a wireless network, after which it works just fine, but Siri can’t see the wireless network by which to determine my location, for example.
This adapter has a RTL8188CUS chip, so I installed the Realtek driver (0001-Wlan_11n_USB_MacOS10.8_Driver_UI_2.0.1.zip), but found the same situation — it looks like an Ethernet adapter, and requires a separate program to connect it to wireless.
Anyone know if there are drivers for this adapter to let macOS properly recognize it as a wireless adapter?
Or, can you recommend a different cheap USB wifi adapter that will be recognized as such under macOS?

Thank you — wow, all USB wifi adapters need to go through this weirdness on macOS? I hadn’t realized that.
Are there any inexpensive PCI-E Wifi cards which are particularly recommended for a Hackintosh? https://www.tonymacx86.com/buyersguide/october/2017/ no longer lists any.
