What is the size of the USB Drive?
As far as backups cannot be located, please note that restoring a 64-bit backup requires a 64-bit recovery drive or Setup media. Is this the casE?

The pen drive could be incompatible or cannot be detected by the computer. To further isolate your issue, we’d like to ask some questions:
- Have you tried reformatting the pen drive?
- Have you tried using other compatible pen drive?
- Have you tried using other USB ports?
We’re looking forward to your response.

If you’re encountering the error: «The drive is not a valid backup location«, try to follow the steps below to create a directory on your USB drive:
1. Right-click the directory and choose Share with, and select Specific people
2. Choose your user profile from the list of users, and click Share, and then Done
3. In the Create System Image menu, choose On a network location
4. Enter the URL for your share (\\your-computer\sharename)
5. Enter your username and password, and click OK
Feel free to post back for the results.

Can’t Create a Backup or System Image in Window 10
I’ve been trying to create a backup and system image for some time now, but my computer keeps stalling at 97% completion (creating a system image) even when I leave it overnight.
Tool I’m using: Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore (Windows 7)
The system image should be less than 300GB and I’m using a 400 GB partition on an external hard drive to create the backup.
— Run windows defender to remove a virus (this was the initial reason I couldn’t create a system image)
— Turn off windows defender
— I’ve removed any previous «partial system image» or backup files from the partitioned hard drive each time I try.
The process stops at 97% each time as it’s trying to create a system image.
How can I troubleshoot and get this process completed?

Hi Landon. I’m Greg, an installation specialist and 9 year Windows MVP, here to help you.
Windows Image backup is dysfunctional and not being fixed. I suggest the best free alternative is Macrium: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-ref. .
Some prefer to move their User folders off of C to another partition to keep the image smaller: http://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-syst. If you image C with the files included then you can also mount the image and extract the files separately, so it serves as both a Windows and a file backup.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it’s resolved.

Failed to create a System Image Backup in windows 10 ( Error Code: 0x807800A1 & 0X800423F3 )
I changed my original HDD due to too many bad sector with a new SSD. Before changing HDD to SSD, I restore the System Image backup (The 1st one I created after purchasing the laptop) to the HDD. Then I clone it to SSD. Then I swapped the HDD to SSD. After that I install all the windows updates & ESET antivirus. Then I tried to create a System Image Backup to a USB HDD but it failed. It showed the below error message.
I disabled the antivirus & it’s firewall, but failed.
I tried the Volume shadow copy [ running & automatic (delayed) ] but still it failed.
Any help regarding this matter will be highly appreciated.

To address your concern, we suggest you try the follow these methods:
Method 1: Run the System File Checker tool.
- It is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. To run the tool, please click on this link.
Method 2: Delete the WindowsImageBackup folder.
- Locate the hidden folder: C:\System Volume Information\
- Locate and delete WindowsImageBackup (If you want to save your previous backups, you can also move them from WindowsImageBackup to a different folder)
Method 3: Format the external hard drive.
- If you are trying to create system backup on an external hard drive, you might have to format it beforehand. Before formatting your external hard drive make sure to move any files from it to a safe location.
Method 4: Delete EFI System Partition and Recovery Partition.
- When you upgrade to Windows 10 or install it on a new hard drive, certain partitions from previous versions of Windows might still be present on your computer causing System Backup to fail. In order to fix this, it’s advised that you remove EFI System Partition and Recovery Partition. To do that, follow these steps:
- Press Windows Key + X and select Disk Management from the menu.
- When Disk Management opens, locate the hard drive on which you wish to store your system backup.
- You should see EFI System Partition and Recovery Partition for that hard drive in Disk Manager. Delete them both.
