«Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with: 0x80070780» while upgrading to Windows 10
While trying to re-install Windows 10, (reasoning see below) the update to Windows 10 breaks with a simple message:
Error: c80070780 Unknown Error on Windows Update
Within the system logs I found an entry stating:
Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with: 0x80070780
This posts indicates that 80070780 might be related to an «couldn`t access file»-error:
Re-installing Windows 10
The PC has an (known) issue with the graphic card (ATI mobility radeon HD 5470): The latest driver (5000 series) does not work. It turns off the screen (blank-screen).
After a first upgrade to windows 10. The screen remained black and I returned to Windows 7 by resetting to the «Last Build».
Today I know: One has to start in «Safe Mode», delete the driver and everything is fine on the next reboot.
Starting the upgrade procedure for Windows 10 today, I have to uncheck «search for new updates» beacuse searching for updates results in the same blank-screen behaviour. Despite the fact I don’t see anything, I’m pretty sure that Windows 10 upgrade stops in the case where I checkt «check for updates» also. Forcing a reboot after a very long time results in a restart to Windows 7.
Actions done so far / Additional information
- OS to upgrade is Windows 7 Home Premium.
- Other windows updates are done without error.
- Security protection is provided by «Microsoft Scurity Essentials»
- Performed the «Windows Update» troubleshoot within the system (No errors)
- Performed Microsoft Fix It Windows Update (troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates)
- Installed KB947821
- Created a Windows 10 DVD for installation using the «Media Creation Toolbox» for Windows 7 64bit.
- Performed a clean restart (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135) and tried to upgrade to windows 10
Any suggestions on how to solve or at least on how to further debug this error?

Update kb 2779768 fails to install, event log shows «Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0xC004F012» retail copy of WS2012E (upgraded from evaulation using the purchased retail key).
Any way to get the cumulative update to install?

any updates or recommendations from this forum? the error makes me think that the system still thinks my version is not authorized even when a proper key was used to upgrade Evaluation version to production. If I followed that scenario it is likely others will since Microsoft mentioned that such scenario of Evaluation->Production is normal and expected upgrade post evaluation.
That seems to me to be a common response when asking for resolutions to problems.
Calling 1-800-Microsoft seems like a new one; unless the person on the other end of the call also tells us to wait. 😉
Honestly calling and opening a case is not a new one. When we in the community cannot help you, it’s your best plan of action. If the bug is in Microsoft’s code, it will be ultimately a free call. I say ultimately because you’ll need to provide a credit card that they will only charge at the close of a case if the issue is yours and not theirs.
I say wait — because I know that there’s an upcoming «Licensing error» fix that is coming. I can’t hurry it up in any way, it’s in the works, it’s being tested, I can’t give any other advice other than wait or call.
This thread isn’t being ignored, there’s just no other advice I have, I’m sorry.

I am also having problems with all of the web apps (same SFC bug that destroys web confirm files) and can not figure out how to fill all of the IIS worker threads so web.config is available for edit/save. if you happen to know a way (I already stopped IIS and try to end the process through task manager), please let me know.
yes for sfc/scannow, unfortunately. due to earlier bug when system stopped accepting my evaluation key (and prior to purchasing the retail key and upgrading). I confirm that the scannow bug does make webapps unusable and want to resolve it.
I want to say I appreciate the communication you do and willingness to organize feedback to product team. My expectations for the Windows server level OS were a lot high higher prior to my experience with Windows 2012 Server Essentials as the amount of show stopping bugs far exceed what is normal for server OS. I wonder how much the release was rushed to make this happen. and kick myself for jumping the gun from WHS v1 to this rather than waiting for the first full service pack
for the system I run I home I have few options
A) try to resolve all of the bugs its has (no updates installing, broken remote connectivity that any built in tool can not repair etc)
b) do full reinstall with retail and worry about domain accounts which I already use and other computers enrolled in that domain
b) live it alone, hope that at least backups continue to work and wait for either full reinstall later or some sort of patching/explanations from the windows server team.
