Question

We finally git around to rebooting a server 2012r2 that had installed some updates a short while back and now it is stuck in a loop showing Getting Windows Ready, it then reboots and does the same again.

I have followed some other peoples cases and have so far removed pending.xml (renamed) and also renamed C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution without luck.

What’s not clear is exactly what is happening during the getting ready phase and so I am at a bit of a loss as to what needs to be massaged to fix this issue. What I’d give for a nice Linux style detailed boot screen!

Unfortunately its pay day and this server runs the payroll database so it could not be worse timing.

Any suggestions welcome, its running under Hyper-V so we can mount the did and edit as needed. We are also a process working our way backups to find one prior the update actually applying.

Please ensure that X: is your system drive.

This command is uesd to cancle pending update.

Then run sfc /scannow to repair your system files.

Thanks for the response, I’m in the UK so only saw your reply this AM.

I worked around the immediate issue by restoring the SYSTEM partition of the VM from an earlier backup. Fortunately through foresight and a reasonable application architecture all of the data and configuration were located on another partition, D:, so I was able to slide the previous C: drive in underneath this and get the users going again.

Initially running the original C: drive inside another VM seemed to be resulting in ‘getting devices ready’ combined with endless reboots so it must being seeing a hardware different though I’m unable to spot a difference right now.

I have run the DISM command via the recovery command prompt and it appeared to process cleanly, safe mode was not accessible as it suggested from the ‘Getting Windows ready’ issue. Sorry I should have mentioned this in my original post.

The DISM command looks like a useful tool for my armoury as sadly its not uncommon for Windows Updates to cause problems.

Windows 2012 getting devices ready

Question

Hi — I’m trying to clean install WSE2012 R2 Preview on the same hardware that I previously installed WSE 2012 on (an HP Microserver N40L)

But, the install hangs with the new Fish background, and a spinner at 84% «Getting devices ready»
I’ve tried restarting the installation, but can’t get past 84% — any ideas ?

I’m now re-installing WSE2012, to see if an upgrade-install to R2 will work

Reinstalled WSE2012 — Ok
Ran Upgrade-type Setup (which installed a fresh copy Windows), but this also stopped at the 84% mark

Tried installing Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Preview, but that stops at 84% also

install successful on hpmicro when Embedded Ethernet card is disable

Ok, I’ve got WSE2012 R2 to install by disabling the nic and then enabling the nic later-on

But I had to give up on Hyper-V 2012 R2 — I tried the same disable/enable nic process, and got Hyper-V 2012 R2 to install ok, but when I then tried to load the nic drivers using PnPutil -i -a D :\ b57nd60a.inf, it got as far as saying «Processing inf» but never completed (I gave it 1/2 hour)

Ok — had enough of this, I’ve disabled the Broadcom nic forever , and installed another nic — a Startech ST1000SPEXD2 — (Realteck chipset) — unfortunately my remote access card had to go ( due to lack of slots), but at least 2012 R2 Essentials has (working) in-box drivers for this nic, and I’ve now joined the party !

same hardware (hp microserver) and same problem 🙁

Sorry, can’t help, but just to report same experience here but with Server 2012 R2 Preview and on at N36L, so possibly this is related to some kind of hardware common to both devices in the HP MicroServer family. I hit the same 84% hang when doing an upgrade from Server 2012, but when I did a fresh install (booting from a USB-mounted ISO) it hung at 4% instead.

I’ve had a quick look at the log files from the most recent setup, and oddly enough it seems to be taking a massive amount of time to install each driver (5-6 minutes). So I’d left it at 10-15 minutes at the 4% mark and it had installed two drivers in that time. Makes me wonder if I just leave it for hours if it will eventually complete, so that’s what I’m trying now.

i think it’s broadcom prolem : \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\bxfcoe.sys

Try to disable embeded eth card in the bios

Thanks for the hint — but (if it won’t install), how do you get to the Setup Logs ?

Same happens on N36L with both Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

As soon as Windows Updates get installed the next reboot hangs up again.

I have installed with ethernet disabled, but now when i re enable the ethernet server 2012 does not boot (gets stuck with Fish and circle on screen) — and it wont allow me to install the driver without the ethernet enabled.

After setting up the partition for the OS to install to get to the command line using SHFT+F10. Make sure the HP NIC driver is _on_ the USB flash drive being used to install from.

Run the NIC Driver Installer via the command line (might take a few tries depending on the timing) just prior to hitting that 84% mark.

If it is sitting there for a while it should be thinking about the various drivers it can try.

Hopefully that gets you past this mark with NICs enabled.
