According to this article from windows forum, the command line hosted network way to turn your PC into WiFi AP is deprecated in Windows 10.

The new way is much similar to smart phones. Go to Settings and turn the Mobile hotspot on.

The detailed steps can be found on Microsoft official site. Use your PC as a mobile hotspot

Turn your Windows 10 PC into a mobile hotspot by sharing your Internet connection with other devices over Wi-Fi. You can share a Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular data connection. If your PC has a cellular data connection and you share it, it will use data from your data plan.

  1. Select the Start button, then select Settings >Network & Internet >Mobile hotspot.
  2. For Share my Internet connection from, choose the Internet connection you want to share.
  3. Select Edit > enter a new network name and password >Save.
  4. Turn on Share my Internet connection with other devices.
  5. To connect on the other device, go to the Wi-Fi settings on that device, find your network name, select it, enter the password, and then connect.

Virtual WiFi/SoftAP fails to start with error: The hosted network couldn’t be started

This article provides a solution to an error (The hosted network couldn’t be started) that occurs when you start Virtual WiFi/SoftAP.

Original product version: Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2012 R2
Original KB number: 2625519

Symptoms

On Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, when you attempt to start Virtual WiFi/SoftAP you may receive the error: The hosted network couldn’t be started.

Cause

This can occur if the «Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power» power option for the wireless network adapter is cleared.

Resolution

Enable the «Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power» power management option for the wireless network adapter using the following steps:

  1. Click on the Start button and select Control Panel.
  2. Select System and Security.
  3. Select Device Manager under System.
  4. Select and expand the Network adapters from the list of devices.
  5. Find the wireless network adapter and right-click on it and select Properties.
  6. Select the Power Management tab.
  7. Under the Power Management tab, make sure the following option is checked (enabled): Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Note: If you have Control Panel configured to view by small or large icons, you may not see the System and Security category listed in step 2. In this case, select System from the available Control Panel applets and select Device Manager from the left pane. You can then skip steps 2-3 and continue with step 4.

More information

Microsoft Virtual WiFi/SoftAP is not supported on Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 when this power option is disabled.

I get ‘Microsoft Hosted Network could not be started’ or ‘Could not start Microsoft Hosted Network’

Microsoft Hosted Network is a Windows feature used by Connectify to create access point mode Hotspots. This function is highly dependent on Windows being up-to-date, but also on your wireless drivers. Here are some things you can try to get a functional Connectify Hotspot:

Fix the Issue by Updating Your Wireless Drivers

Unfortunately, Windows does a poor job of keeping drivers up to date, so often times you have to manually update your drivers or use a tool that will help do it for you. However, we strongly recommend looking for drivers by visiting the wireless device or computer manufacturer’s website — learn here how to update your wireless (WiFi) drivers: https://support.connectify.me/article/354-how-to-update-your-wireless-wifi-driver.

Start the Hosted Network Service Manually

You can also try manually starting the service yourself. Open a Windows Command Prompt as Admin (in the Start Screen / Menu search for ‘CMD’ -> right-click on the icon that pops up -> select ‘Run as administrator’) and enter the following:

The command prompt should then show «The hosted network started». After that, try starting Connectify Hotspot and see if that helped.

Use Wi-Fi Direct If Hosted Network is Not Supported

If you don’t get the confirmation message above (‘The hosted network started.’) or get a message saying that hosted network is not supported, then you have to use the Wi-Fi Direct service instead.

Go to the Connectify Hotspot user interface — Settings — Advanced and select the ‘Prefer Wi-Fi Direct’ checkbox. Restart your hotspot afterward. Connectify Hotspot should be working.

Thanks for the feedback There was a problem submitting your feedback. Please try again later.
