Users of Windows 10 now have the option to toggle fullscreen mode for apps in Windows 10. Apps such as Netflix, Edge, or the Paint 3D feature controls for minimizing, maximizing, and closing the app window.

Games will usually run in fullscreen mode, but there might be some apps that don’t feature such an option. What should users do if they want to run a fullscreen app in window mode?

What’s the solution for running Edge in fullscreen mode, for instance?

How to full screen an app on Windows 10?

How to toggle fullscreen mode in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge only supports a maximizing option, not a fullscreen mode. F11 doesn’t work in Microsoft Edge and, as you browse through all the options, you aren’t going to find a solution for launching Edge in fullscreen.

The only option available is using a shortcut to launch most Windows 10 apps in a dedicated fullscreen mode: Windows-Shift-Enter. This toggles the active Windows 10 app between normal and fullscreen mode.

This shortcut can also be used to run games and apps that normally launch in fullscreen mode but in windowed mode.

Edit: Microsoft followed all other major browsers and now you can use F11 to enter the Fullscreen mode.

Albeit, you can’t toggle it as a default option, but pressing a single key shouldn’t be an issue, now would it?

Microsoft Edge is moving to the Chromium-based platform so we can expect a better experience from the Windows 10 native browser.

Windows 10 full-screen limitations

Unfortunately, the feature has some restrictions and they include the following:

  • The shortcut above works for most Windows 10 apps but not for all of them. It seems to be working just fine with Microsoft Edge, Bubble Witch Saga, and Netflix, but it may not work for other apps. It might only work for UWP apps but not for not-UWP apps, such as the ones created for Windows 8.
  • You cannot use Esc if you want to exit the fullscreen mode and you don’t have any indications displayed on the screen on how to leave it. You can still use the Alt-Tab combination, though.
  • When using the shortcut to run Microsoft Edge in fullscreen mode, the address bar, and the tabs are not going to be displayed. If you want to navigate to other tabs, you can use keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-Shift-Tab or Ctrl-Tab. You can also use Ctrl-T, in case you want to open a new tab with options for loading a new web address.
  • If you middle-click on right-click on certain links, they’ll open in new tabs.

Even if the feature has its limitations, it’s still better to have it at your disposal in case you want to toggle fullscreen mode in Windows 10.

How to make the window full screen with Javascript (stretching all over the screen)

How can I make a visitor’s browser go fullscreen using JavaScript, in a way that works with IE, Firefox and Opera?

19 Answers 19

This is as close as you can get to full screen in JavaScript:

In newer browsers such as Chrome 15, Firefox 10, Safari 5.1, IE 10 this is possible. It’s also possible for older IE’s via ActiveX depending on their browser settings.

Here’s how to do it:

The user obviously needs to accept the fullscreen request first, and there is not possible to trigger this automatically on pageload, it needs to be triggered by a user (eg. a button)

This code also includes how to enable full screen for Internet Explorer 9, and probably older versions, as well as very recent versions of Google Chrome. The accepted answer may also be used for other browsers.

  • Chrome Fullscreen API (note, however, that requestFullscreen «only works during» «[m]ost UIEvents and MouseEvents, such as click and keydown, etc.», «so it cannot be used maliciously».)
  • How to make browser full screen using F11 key event through JavaScript

Here is a complete solution to get in and out of full screen mode (aka cancel, exit, escape)

The fullscreen API provides an easy way for web content to be presented using the user’s entire screen. This article provides information about using this API.

The new html5 technology – fullscreen API gives us an easy way to present a web page content in full-screen mode. We are about to give you detailed information about the fullscreen mode. Just try to imagine about all possible advantages which you can get using this technology – full-screen photo albums, videos, and even games.

But before we describe this new technology, I have to note that this technology is experimental, and supported by all major Browsers.

Create Function

In Html Put Code like

Try screenfull.js. It’s a nice cross-browser solution that should work for Opera browser as well.

Simple wrapper for cross-browser usage of the JavaScript Fullscreen API, which lets you bring the page or any element into fullscreen. Smoothens out the browser implementation differences, so you don’t have to.

Luckily for unsuspecting web users this cannot be done with just javascript. You would need to write browser specific plugins, if they didn’t already exist, and then somehow get people to download them. The closest you can get is a maximized window with no tool or navigation bars but users will still be able to see the url.

window.open(‘http://www.web-page.com’, ‘title’ , ‘type=fullWindow, fullscreen, scrollbars=yes’);»>

This is generally considered bad practice though as it removes a lot of browser functionality from the user.

Now that the full screen APIs are more widespread and appear to be maturing, why not try Screenfull.js? I used it for the first time yesterday and today our app goes truly full screen in (almost) all browsers!

Be sure to couple it with the :fullscreen pseudo-class in CSS. See https://www.sitepoint.com/use-html5-full-screen-api/ for more.

For calling from script use this code,

or with hyperlink use this

In Firefox 10, you can make the current page go fullscreen (real fullscreen with no window chrome) using this javascript:

This will works to show your window in full screen

Or make have javascript link like this.

A Q&D way to go full screen, if you are in a «kiosk» situation, is to feed an F11 to the browser window after it’s up and running. This is not pretty starting up and the user might be able to poke a touch screen at the top and get a semi-full-screen view, but feeding the F11 might do in a pinch or just to get started on a project.

Here is my full solution for Full Screen and Exit Full Screen both (many thanks to help from tower’s answer above):

Windows 10 Full Screen Aspect Ratio 4:3 problem

Hello there Windows 10 users,

I’ve recently updated to Windows 10 Pro, from Windows 8.1 Pro, since i’ve updated i’ve had problems playing games in fullscreen on a 4:3 aspect ratio.

I’ve noticed something strange, if i change to a lower resolution on desktop and than go into IntelHD 4000 and select «Scale Full Screen» it works perfect, i mean it stretches the resolution to the whole screen, but only on desktop, if i enter a game it will have blackbars on the sides.

But here’s the odd thing, if i enter a game, let’s say for example CS:GO or Dota2, and i have ingame aspect ration 4:3, my game will have blackbars on each side of the monitor, even if i have «Scale Full Screen» selected in IntelHD 4000.

And another odd thing is that if i am ingame and press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, the desktop takes the 4:3 aspect ratio of the game with blackbars on the side.

What can i do? Please give me a solution to this annoying bug.

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you are facing. I will certainly help you with this.

This issue might happen due to not updated Display drivers. I suggest you to follow the below given methods.

Method 1:

You may update the Display driver from Device Manager manually and check if this helps.

  • Press (Windows key + X) and click on “Device Manager”.
  • Expand “Display Adaptor”.
  • Right click on the video driver and select “Update Driver Software”. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Method 2:

If there no updated drivers available on the computer manufacturer’s website, then try installing it in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows. Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

  • Download the driver from the manufacturer’s website.
  • Right-click on the driver setup file and click on ‘Properties’.
  • Click on the ‘Compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8/8.1 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

Hope this information helps. Post back with updated issue details for further help.

I am running a laptop and using my television screen. I have no options to change the aspect ratio to what I need. When I search for or update drivers, I get no results. Everything was fine before the update.
